6th grade reading curriculum guide
The unit numbers correspond to Holt’s Introductory Course Elements of Literature textbook. Teachers may choose which stories and material they would like to use from each collection to teach the Oklahoma state standards. A novel study will be used each quarter as a cumulative study of the individual skills that have been targeted.
1st quarter Genre emphasis: contemporary literature/short stories Freak the Mighty novel study Academic vocabulary Narrative writing Reflective writing (constructed responses to reading passages) Literary focus: analyzing plot and setting Collection 2: Characters (methods of characterization) Nonfiction: informational reading focus Benchmark test I 3rd quarter Genre emphasis: cultural literacy/short stories/historical fiction Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry novel study Academic vocabulary (issues of prejudice) |
2nd quarter genre emphasis: poetry/plot sequels Esperanza Risingnovel study Academic vocabulary Collection 6: Metaphors Symbols and Images Free-verse Formula poetry (cinquain, haiku, etc.) Writing/illustrating an original book of poetry Recitation: presenting a choral reading Benchmark test II 4th quarter genre emphasis: historical fiction, Code Talker novel study Academic vocabulary Collection 3: theme Collection 4: forms of fiction Collection 8: literary criticism If time allows, students will conclude the year with the sequel to Freak the Mighty, Max the Mighty.
